MERAHPUTIH.COM - LORDE kembali dengan merilis album terbarunya. What Was That menjadi lagu utama yang dipilih sebagai single pertama dari album keempat itu. Pada 16 April, Lorde secara resmi memperkenalkan single tersebut kepada publik, lengkap dengan sampul yang merupakan hasil karya seniman Talia Chetrit.
Beberapa hari kemudian, tepatnya pada 22 April, Lorde sempat membawakan lagu ini secara live di hadapan ratusan penggemar di Washington Square Park, New York. Penampilan tersebut berlangsung singkat karena harus dihentikan pihak kepolisian.
